This year the Mount Rainier Recreation Committee is sponsoring our first city wide Parade of Lights!

What is a Parade of Lights? This is where you decorate your home with lights of any kind. You can decorate for the season, religious, secular, or if there is a cause that is near and dear to your heart…..decorate your home to reflect that! No lighting display will be discouraged as long as it is family friendly. *Let’s keep it G rated.

The recreation committee will go around the evening of December 22nd, to judge all homes that are participating (so make sure your lights are on!). We will be awarding 5 awards for participants: Most Creative Display, Best Apartment Window Display, People’s Choice Home, People’s Choice Business/Storefront, and Best Overall.

The mayor and council are sponsoring various “Cider Stations” set up around the city that evening and will be serving cider/hot chocolate, cookies/doughnuts to people out looking at the lights. These cider stations will also serve as congregation points to meet and talk to your neighbors as they are out enjoying the lights as well.

Times for the event will be from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. These are the hours we are asking for everyone to have their lights on. The cider stations will be up and the committee will be out judging. Please know that you can stay out driving or walking around looking at lights longer than that if you want.

If you would like to be considered for the judging, please send an email to RecreationCommittee@MountRainierMD.org to be placed on our list of addresses. This list will be available at city hall, the cider stations, online (Facebook pages/Listserv), and on Doodle.com for the People’s Choice voting. *We will not be posting the list here to the website. Deadline to register is midnight, December 14th and winners will be announced on Monday, December 24th.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email us at the above email address or contact city hall to have one of us contact you.

We are looking forward to seeing all the wonderful and creative displays everyone comes up with!

The holidays can be one of the hardest times for seniors in our society. Some seniors do not get to see their families for numerous reasons while others have no family at all.

The Mount Rainier Recreation Committee is teaming up with the 6th graders at Mount Rainier Elementary School to host a reception/party for the seniors at Rainier Manor. We are calling this outreach, “Stocking for Seniors”. Each participating senior will receive a hand craft made by a 6th grade student and a stocking full of goodies provided by the recreation committee.

The recreation committee will also be providing refreshments, music, and games for the seniors.

We are planning to do a similar outreach in the community with our middle and high schoolers. They would go around to the homes of seniors, identified by our city social worker to visit with them and take them a stocking as well. After the visitations, we will be hosting an after party for the middle and high schoolers. We will have pizza, drinks, games, and fun! *Location for party TBA

If you have a teen in the community who would like to participate in our city-wide effort and after party, please email us at RecreationCommittee@MountRainierMD.org or call city hall and let them know you would like to speak with one of us about this program.

If you would like to make a donation towards the stockings, you can contact us at the above email or through city hall.
